Help Prevent the Spread of Coronavirus

What is Coronavirus?

According to the CDC, coronaviruses are a large family of viruses, including some that commonly cause mild upper-respiratory tract illnesses. Some affect people, and others, such as canine and feline coronaviruses, only infect animals. Rarely coronaviruses that infect animals have emerged to infect humans and spread between people. COVID-19 is a new disease caused by a new coronavirus strain that has not previously been seen in humans.

For up-to-date information on the virus, we recommend visiting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

How Coronavirus Spreads

The virus that causes COVID-19 was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and was linked to a live animal market. However, the virus is now spreading from person-to-person. This virus seems to be spreading easily and sustainably in the community, also known as "community spread."

According to the CDC, coronaviruses are generally thought to be spread from person-to-person through respiratory droplets. This may happen through:

  • Viruses in the air due to coughing and sneezing
  • Close personal contact, such as touching and shaking hands
  • Touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose or eyes before washing your hands
  • Rarely, fecal contamination

COVID-19 and Your Animals

At this time, the CDC states there is no evidence that companion animals, including pets, can spread COVID-19 or that they might be a source of infection in the United States. However, because all animals can carry germs that can make people sick, it's always a good idea to practice healthy habits around pets and other animals.

  • Wash your hands after handling animals, their food, waste or supplies.
  • Practice good pet hygiene and clean up after pets properly.
  • Take pets to the veterinarian regularly and talk to your veterinarian if you have any questions or concerns about your pet's health.

If you are sick with COVID-19 (either suspected or confirmed), you should restrict contact with pets and other animals, just like you would around other people. Although the CDC has not received reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19, it is still recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus.

Pets

When possible, have another member of your household care for your animals while you are sick. Avoid contact with your pet, including petting, snuggling, being kissed or licked and sharing food. If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hands before and after you interact with them.

Cleaning vs Disinfecting

  • Cleaning refers to the removal of germs, dirt, and impurities from hard, non-porous surfaces. It does not kill germs, but by removing them, it lowers their numbers and the risk of spreading infection.
  • Disinfecting refers to using chemicals, for example, EPA-registered disinfectants, to kill germs on hard, non-porous surfaces. This process does not necessarily clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, it can further lower the risk of spreading infection.
  • Visit the Centers for Disease Control for more information on cleaning and disinfecting.
